The English Springer Spaniel is a medium-sized sporting dog with a docked tail. There are several acceptable color combinations: Springers may be black or liver with white markings or predominately white with black or liver markings; tricolor (black and white or liver and white with tan markings - usually found on eyebrows, cheeks, insides of ears and under tail); blue or liver roan. Any white portions of the coat may be flecked with ticking. At Rhythmic we have both liver and black.

Being a sporting dog, a Springer requires a reasonable amount of exercise for both mental and physical well being.

Springers are very affectionate dogs and require attention from their human companions daily.

Grooming is required. Daily brushing, weekly ear cleaning, monthly baths and monthly "hair cuts" will keep the Springer looking and feeling his best.

  1. Hips, eyes and skin are the primary health problems in the Springer. When purchasing a puppy, the buyer should inquire if hip and elbow X-rays and eye checks for retinal dysplasia and PRA have been done on the sire and the dam of the litter they are considering.

Temperament should be the primary concern of every Springer owner or prospective owner. I purchased my first Springer in 1994 and fell in love with the breed. Unfortunately he had megaesophagus and then complications from it had taken too much of a toll on him. We purchased our second Springer in 2000 .After seeing how bad the temperament of this breed has become, I took a break to do some much needed reflection. I am now very much back into this wonderful breed with temperament being our #1 concern, We will not sacrifice temperament for anything! The English Springer Spaniels should be biddable, happy, friendly and outgoing dogs. Puppy buyers should evaluate the temperament of the sire and dam. English Springers are versatile dogs that train easily, whether as family pets, show dogs, hunting companions, tracking, obedience or agility competitors. Because of their intelligence and easy-going personalities, gentle, reward oriented training will produce the quickest results

  1. Bullet In some breeds, particularly Labrador Retrievers, Samoyeds, and English Springer Spaniels, individuals with retinal folds are NOT given a CERF number. Since retinal dysplasia is common in these breeds and dogs and bitches with retinal folds can have puppies with blindness and/or skeletal problems the gene should not be perpetuated. In all breeds, individuals with geographic and retinal detachment forms of retinal dysplasia are NOT certifiable.
